The trooper was attempting traffic control when suspect came from an unknown location and shot the trooper once in the shoulder and once in the chest, and then assaulted the trooper, wrestling him to the ground. The suspect repeatedly slammed the trooper’s head into the ground.
The struggle was witnessed by a passerby in a motor vehicle, who got out of his car to render aid to the trooper, who could not use his right arm to defend himself. The Good Samaritan attempted to get the assailant to stop, but when the trooper asked for help, the man returned to his car, retrieved a personally owned firearm, and shot the trooper’s attacker.
Another passerby stopped to help, and called dispatch on the trooper’s portable radio. The woman in the rollover accident and the trooper’s assailant died from their injuries; the trooper is listed in stable condition and is expected to recover fully. The names of those involved in the incident are not being released at this time.
