New Orleans ushered in the new year by doubling January’s homicide rate from the previous year. In the past month, 75 people were wounded or killed in New Orleans. Criminologists say the trend of rising urban violence is not exclusive to New Orleans. As the year progresses, experts believe New Orleans will not be the only metropolitan area with rising gun violence. Among other things, criminologists attribute “The Ferguson Effect” to the rising homicide rate. In fear of being labeled racist, police officers have become less proactive in their activities. Criminals have thoroughly taken advantage of less aggressive policing. As a result, the violence in 2017 has risen and is only expected to keep rising.
