In the first commercial pirate attack since 2012, Somali pirates seized an oil tanker owned by Aurora Ship Management FZE, a company based in the United Arab Emirates. The crew of eight is currently being held for ransom aboard the ship. The ship was seized and continues to sit on the Northern end of Somalia. Communications between the crew and the outside world have been severed. Moreover, communications between negotiators and the pirates have progressed slowly. As of now, no ransom price has been declared.
The attack comes at the heels of NATO ending its anti-piracy mission off Somalia at the end of 2016. In light of this new attack, it may be necessary for governments and corporations to heighten security measures off the Horn of Africa.
